In 2008, for the first time in my career, I faced a significant career transition. As I
prepared a resume and interview materials, I experienced firsthand how pervasive and valuable the Internet had become in the job search process. Based on these experiences I concluded three things:
- The need for personal marketing and branding in a job search has never been more prevalent.
- The Internet is changing the job search market.
- Job seekers need technology driven marketing tools that traditional outplacement firms typically do not provide.
Today, there is growing frustration, inefficiencies and even misinformation associated with both on line and off line job searches. Only 10-20% of all new hires are the result of listings on job boards. The job seeker has lost control of the process to keyword searches of resumes (for profiling). They have little control of Google searches for background checks and the constant reselling of their personal information to recruiters or other third parties.
If that were not enough, web spiders are scraping data on individuals. The "job sites" are proliferating into the thousands. And the world of "social networks" is growing exponentially. Yet, when leveraged properly, these social networking sites are incredibly powerful in uncovering career opportunities. Which means, people must factor all of these "pieces of the puzzle" into their job search strategies.
